Eiffel obtuvo un importante éxito con la construcción del puente sobre el río Duero en Oporto, lo que le permitió recibir un importante encargo en su país natal: el Viaducto del Garabit sobre el río Truyère, en la localidad de Saint-Flour. El encargo fue aceptado por Eiffel en 1879 y cinco años más tarde el puente estaba concluido. Se trata de una obra de gran atrevimiento técnico al alcanzar más de ciento doce metros de altura con un arco de ciento sesenta y cinco  metros de luz, armonizando de manera espectacular con el paisaje que rodea a la construcción. En los planos Eiffel incluyó la estructura de Notre-Dame de París en el arco de su viaducto para indicar las impresionantes medidas que iba a alcanzar con este proyecto, superando las cotas de la catedral parisina.

Eiffel won a major success with the construction of the bridge over the
Douro River in Oporto, which enabled him to receive an important assignment in his home country: the Garabit Viaduct over the River Truyère in the town of Saint-Flour.
The commission was accepted by Eiffel in 1879 and five years later the bridge was completed.
This is a work of great technical audacity to reach over one hundred and twelve meters tall with an arc of one hundred and sixty-five meters of light, dramatically harmonize with the landscape surrounding the construction.
